I am in the IT profession and looking to transition to HR. Unfortunately, my resume is strictly technical. I am currently working towards my HR certificate at Cornell. Are there any suggestions as to how I can get my foot in the door to gain HR experience. I will be losing my job at the end of the year.

If you are getting a degree in HR it wont be that difficult to get into any company as an HR trainee but only that your technical knowledge will be of no use after this. BUt still you have to join in as an trainee.

I don't know if your IT will be 'null' in the HR field, especially if you look for a company that is highly technical. Having a basic understanding of what the company does will definitely help you to get your foot in the door in any department. Keep applying, let them know you are in school for HR and that you have an IT background. It shows that you have an understanding and that you work towards your goals to achievement.

I think chompz has a great point. Try to make a special effort to branch ionto HR in a company that is highly technical, your IT experience may yet prove valuable there. Talk to your schools job placement office and consider volunteering to do HR type work for a charity or getting an internship.
