I am looking for some advise on how to enter the HR field. Currently I am enrolled in a certificate program through a university in HR. I also have a BS degree in Health Science and have worked in office environments for almost 6 years since graduating college. I have worked in health care and insurance. I have submitted my resume for entry level HR assistant positions but don't seem to hear from the companies. Is there anything else I can do to get HR experience and get employers to look at me? I am confident I can perform the HR assistant job if given the opportunity. Any advise is appreciated!

Hi kmcarter1979:

I honestly think that the best way to get into HR is through a recruiting agency.

I've been in HR for over 4 years and in my experience, I seldom see employees hired or even considered by faxing resumes directly to HR without a having a contact. They would have to do thorough background checks and extensive reference checks. Recruiters already have that information. They have signed agreements and, in most cases, a good standing relationship with HR. They do all of the negotiating on your behalf, so there is a definitely shorter waiting period for getting answers and responses.

As a side note: Don't always disregard the power of temporary or contract work. For example, I actually started out being placed as a temp receptionist at a worldwide corporate headquarters. I was constantly saying that I could help with anything they needed, since I had very strong computer skills. By doing that, I was able to show HR what I was capable of and what I was worth as an employee. After three months, a job opened up in HR - I applied for it and worked there in HR for almost three years.

But it all started with a recruiting agency.

Good luck!

I too think that this is the best way to get into an agency. You have posted your resume and you have done everything from your side just wait for sometime as the companies need freshers from time to time and they will call you soon.
